Why are there so many car accidents on 880 in Oakland?

Why are there so many car accidents on 880 in Oakland? It is flat and straight, and there are no big roads entering/exiting the freeway. So why is it that there are always so many rear-end accidents there?

My guess is that people feel like they do not need to pay attention when they are driving, since there are no curves, no hills, etc. So people check their email, make a phone call, fiddle with the radio, etc. Then when the traffic in front of them comes to a stop - boom! I travel 880 almost every day and almost always see at least one set of cars pulled to side of the road, after a rear-end collision.
