Why You Need Uninsured Motorist Coverage
I have written in the past about the importance of uninsured motorist coverage. It protects you from the myriad drivers out there who choose to
drive without insurance. It is also pretty cheap. I got a call from a prospective client the other day who was in a rather serious accident. She had
broken her arm and her collarbone, and will probably lose a great deal of use of her (non-dominant) hand. Less than 24 hours before this accident, she paid off her car. Since she no longer had to have the car insured for all causes of loss (since the loan was now paid off), she canceled her UM/UIM insurance coverage. The guy who hit her has a minimum policy and she is now looking at a scenario where she gets only $15,000 for a
massive, life-changing injury.
So the lesson is: get underinsured/uninsured motorist coverage when you renew your policy, or better yet, get it today.
